The Alpineer Club has been an active recreational and social club in the Bay Area since 1939, founded by a band of avid folk dancers and daring skiers. The club maintains an attractive Lodge in the High Sierra near the Donner Summit area, close to several cross-country (Royal Gorge and Castle Peak) and downhill ski areas (Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Soda Springs, Boreal Ridge) and practically astride the Pacific Crest trail. The scenery is beatiful any time of year. Comfortable accomodations in roomettes for four and hearty meals ara available at modest rates to members, their children and guests. A large social room with an enormous fireplace provides a friendly atmosphere for chatter, parties and dancing. Members may use the lodge any day of the week during any season For a modest annual charge, members can rent lockers in the lodge to store plenty of gear and beverage. Alpineers are outdoor people, whatever the season. They ski in winter - both alpine and nordic - bike from spring to fall, sail in San Francisco Bay and Donner Lake, hike in the Bay Area and the High Sierra. The Club's members maintain the lodge. During the summer, scheduled work parties (which are half recreation and eating!) stock the wood-pile for the winter fires and clean, polish, paint and repair the effects of a year's wear. The club belongs to its members, who are interested in the Club's welfare. |
